The companies have joined forces to develop BioIsoprene™ renewable, cost-competitive alternative for petroleum-derived isoprene. Danisco anticipates the collaboration will significantly grow new business in the biochemical sector.
The BioIsoprene™ project could revolutionize an industry by providing a bio-based alternative to a key chemical in synthetic rubber production. Genencor will supply Goodyear with BioIsoprene™ for its tire manufacturing operations. Market opportunities extend to other applications as well, such as rubber for golf balls, paint, and adhesives. The project's ambitious plan includes reaching significant technical milestones by 2010, commissioning the first large-scale manufacturing plant by 2012, and making the first commercial sales by 2013.
This news comes on the heels of the May announcement of the DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol joint venture to develop integrated systems for cellulosic ethanol production. Once again, Genencor is leveraging a strategic collaboration to lead the way in accelerating biorefinery development - this time in the biochemicals space.
